Extra credit Blog_ What can you do with as a English Major

On the 1st of May,2012, I had the opportunely to explore the possibilities of a English major. English is very important for anyone in America to be successful. If one can  communicate well, than one can get their points across and  try to get want they want. Being a English major can help communicate and have successful jobs. Since I am a lib-art/ history major, i will need to have a strong connection to the English language and I will need to take many English/writing classes.  English will be good for me to know because, i think I might want to work as an Urban planner and/or public relations. Those jobs will require a strong English background as, i will have to communicate with the public everyday.

Final Blog

In this blog, I will reflect on the American Food system and it's overall meaning for me. In my opinion, everyone in America should know where their food comes from.  it is important to know only a small amount of companies  control the majority of the food system. Companies such as Smithfield Foods (Who is the largest producer of pork products in the world.) Tyson Foods (the largest producer of chicken products), PepsiCo, had great power over how the food system works. The food companies get billions of dollars to fund there food operations by the governments of the United States. without government money the food system might not be profitable. Thru out the semester, I learned a lot about the food system and how it's produces our food.  I never knew how many waste and toxic the food companies produce everyday in to our environment and  food. I also never knew the billions of taxpayers dollars the food companies gets from our governments.it always seems like the food industry and government always get closer and closer together.Although by contrast, my eating habits have  stayed  the same. I most likey will eat the same foods. Although I knew how the food is produce, it still don't brother me to change my eating habits.

The 11th Hour

In this blog I will write and review the documentary film  The Eleventh Hour.  The Eleventh Hour was created in 2007 and it is produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. The main focus of the film  The Eleventh Hour is to tell the world about what's happening with the earth's national environment.  The film interviews from many people, from all round the world. The Eleventh Hour deals with a lot of the earth's environmental issues. I want to focus on the environmental issue on our dependence of fossil fuels such as oil. Fossil fuels are not an renewable source of energy and with it's use increase the Co2 in our air. According to V.Jay said, that oil increases the Co2 levels, in which pollute not only the air bu the sea too. This film can be connected to the food system and the topics we talked about in class.  The food system uses fossil fuels not only for the  transportation of food but, also fossil fuels help make the plastic containers that many food comes in. The larger and more centralize the food system gets, the more oil we need to use to keep the system running.

Blog number Four-The end

In the article The end of Overeating written by Dr David A Kessler, he writes about the psychological connection between  sugar, fat and salt and our human eating habits. He writes that humans do not overeat because we have a link of willpower. Instead Dr Kessler writes that overeat because, we are addicted to fat, salt and sugar. Over the decades our access to  fat, salt and sugar in our food has grown. He writes "food had become more readily available in the 190s and 1980s"(Kessler 6). He also writes that people have a "bliss point"(Kessler 19). In which people will only find food pleasurable after a set amount of sugar, salt and fat. When pleasurable foods, we continue to eat more it.
Dr Kessler surely right in my opinion about the connections humans have between fat, salt and sugar and our eating habits. I am a perfect example of his theory. As I am writing this blog, I am having a box of pizza. I am almost finish with my pizza and I am still  not satisfied with my hunger. Sometimes for me it feels like pizza goes in and out my body. Pizza has a lot of salt and fat and since I like this pizza, I will  continue to buy it.
With Dr Keesler theory can be connected to  Cafo system. The Cafo system needs a strong continued demand in order to keep functioning. The greater  demand for Meat, chicken, fish, eggs, pork and turkey, the greater demand for Cafo output. The food companies will continue to spend billions of dollars find other our bliss points. What this means is the greater continue of our food addictions are, more we continue to feed the Cafo's.

From Farm to Fridge

In this blog, I will review and summarize the video Farm to Fridge made by,the  group Mercy for Amimals. Most Americans do not and will not ever know how their food gets to their local supermarket; especially their meat and chicken products. This video shows the inhuman process of  animal  food production in the United States.Although the video's overall  main theme for some viewers maybe biased, due to the producers of this film being pro-veganists, I believe all Americans should watch this video.
The video begans with the production of poultry products; poultry products are chicken meat and eggs. Chickens are concentrated in the thousands in units known as Cafo's. Cafo's are defined as concentrated animal feeding operations; in which animals  are rasied in units. In these units chickens and chicks do not have access to fresh air and land. When these are killed for meat and egg production, they are killed fully conscious with great pain.Like the chickens, cows are also concentrated in units with no access to clean land and water. Cows and calf's are suffer in unclean conductions with workers constrantly killing and
amputatiing them for space issues and product production;such as meat and milk.
A lot can be said about the quality of  meat supply when, the meat comes from such unethical treatment. Many people may such accept the slaughterhouses depicted in this video and continue to consume the meat normally and that is perfectly fine. I insist that the meat that comes from the majority of slaughterhouses today is not accpectable.Americans should be more knowable where their food comes from and Farm to Fridge will be a great way to start.

Blog #1

Hello readers, welcome to my blog FoodandEnglishClass. In this blog, I will write about various aspects of the American food system; particularly the CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operations)
system. In recent discussions of the CAFO system, a controversial issue has been whether CAFO"s are good for not only the American food system but, for the global food supply. On the one hand, some argue that CAFO's are great for the United States. From this perspective, CAFO's provide Americans with a economically viable way to get mass production of  meat to feed millions of our people. On the other hand, however, others argue that CAFO's are dangerous. CAFO's pose many negative effects to our economy, animals and resources. In the words of Daniel Imhoff, one of this views main proponents states that, that food we produced under the CAFO system is not cheap or economically viable. According to this view, CAFO's are subsidized with billions of taxpayer's money . In sum, then, the issue is whether CAFO's are viable to continue as they are today or it CAFO's need to either to be reformed or abolished .
My own view is that CAFO's are good in idea or in theory, for what the main purpose of CAFO's are. The purpose of CAFO's is to produce as much meat as possible for our  commercialized and industrialized world.Though I concede that CAFO's in practice are not a good idea. I still maintain that in order to reform the CAFO system, industry and consumers alike has to fix the system. CAFO's are industries; industries always need to adapt  to the future to survive. Also consumers can influence industries, though their spending power.  For example, if consumers buy more organic or not CAFO meat products, the food companies will produce more of those products..Although some might object that consumers have a lot of power, I would reply that companies mostly always listen to want the public want.Companies always want to maintain a positive public image. The issue is important because, the food that we eat affects our lives. According to Daniel Imhoff, we live in the world of CAFO's. " Welcome to an issue for our Time." ,Daniel Imhoff states in The CAFO Reader.
